A Gravity Model of Migration between ENC and EU
نویسندگان
چکیده
A Gravity Model of Migration between ENC and EU Due to ageing population and low birth rates, the European Union (EU) will need to import foreign labour in the next decades. In this context, the EU neighbouring countries (ENC) are the main countries of origin and transit of legal and illegal migration towards Europe. Their economic, cultural and historical links also make them an important potential source of labour force. The objective of this paper is to analyse past and future trends in ENC-EU bilateral migration relationships. With this aim, two different empirical analyses are carried out. First, we specify and estimate a gravity model for nearly 200 countries between 1960 and 2010; and, second, we focus on within EU-27 migration flows before and after the enlargement of the EU. Our results show a clear increase in migratory pressures from ENC to the EU in the near future, but South-South migration will also become more relevant. JEL Classification: J11, J15, J61, C23, C53

The Gravity Model and Iran's Trade Flows
This article has considered the volume and direction of Iran’s trade using the gravity model. The major issue in this analysis is to explore why Iran over or under-traded with the 76 countries relative to the predicted trade flows of the model. The study attempts to explore the reasons from the respect of both the model itself and Iran’s trade structure. This is done by analysing the performanc...
متن کاملModeling ENP-EU Migration in a Spatial Gravity Framework
The study uses a spatial gravity model with spatial dependence in the bilateral flows between origins and destinations. This is important for policy because it underscores the futility of parochial policy targeting in the presence of spatial spillover. Traditionally, it has been assumed that only developments in the origins and destinations affect the magnitude of migration between them. In the...
متن کاملThe Impact of Integration on International Trade Flows: the Cases of EU, OIC & ECO
The growth of regional trade blocks has been one of the major developments in international relations in recent years. Regional agreements vary widely but, all have the objective of reducing barriers to trade between member countries that in most cases result in increasingly trade flows and economic growth. This paper attempts to explore the results of trade integration in ECO, EU and OIC block...
متن کاملA Gravity Study of the Sectoral Trade Impact of Labour Migration in an Enlarged EU1
In this paper we estimate a sectoral gravity model for trade between three regional blocs of the enlarged EU that we defined as North (wealthiest EU), South (Greece, Portugal and Spain) and East (acceding Central and Eastern European countries). The estimation results show the need to incorporate trade theories based on both endowments and scale economies in the presence of transport costs. We ...
متن کاملChanges in endotoxin-binding proteins during major elective surgery: important role for soluble CD14 in regulation of biological activity of systemic endotoxin.
Assessment of circulating endotoxin during the perioperative period, which is only demonstrated by the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) test, may be modulated by several endotoxin-binding proteins. Endotoxin-neutralizing capacity (ENC) and the plasma levels of soluble CD14 (sCD14), lipopolysaccharide-binding protein, and bactericidal/permeability-increasing protein (BPI) were determined in 40 pat...
